I had a quick interview with a friend and I hope it helps anyone who reads this...by giving you insight if you are still wondering about university and what to study. Most importantly, I hope it encourages you about the fact that you don't have to have it all figured out and you're not alone.
1. Can you briefly introduce yourself?
Hey! I’m Ozioma. I graduated from university about a month ago. I enjoy reading novels, listening to music and travelling.
2. Why did you choose the course you are studying?
I chose Economics because I did not know what I wanted to do after University and I was told that Economics was (and is) versatile.
3. Prior to starting university, were you in A Level, foundation or high school?
Well, after secondary school I did a foundation year.
4. Do you enjoy your course?
Lol. I did not dislike my course. I was just okay with it for the first 2 years, and in my final year I got round to asking God to help me enjoy it, and He did!
5. What are some of the modules you take?
2 modules I took in my last year were Development Economics and History of Economic Thought.
6. What are 5 things you have learned in university, (or more)?
I learnt to depend on God for company (I felt rather lonely from time to time in my Foundation year and this drew me closer to God). Being in a new environment and alone made me more introspective and I let go of things I had internalised prior to university e.g. there was nothing wrong with not being in a relationship. At university I learnt more about my identity in Christ and began to understand that my value came from being a child of God rather than people’s opinions or what I thought their opinions were. Oh, I learnt a lot of economics.
7. Would you choose your course again you had the chance? Give reasons for your answer if they aren’t repeated answers to questions already answered.
Hehehe, possibly. Or maybe geography or a language? Just because I like languages and human geography is interesting.
8. If your parents and others opinions, societal pressures and the need for money were non-existent, what would you do? CAREER wise not vacation wise plix :p
A few things, but I’ll mention one- I’d work for an organisation that focuses on women’s empowerment and development in Nigeria.
9. What would you tell your pre-Uni self?
Don’t worry.
10. What do you wish you knew before?
Critical thinking is really important. Especially, if you’re going to study an essay-based and subjective course like economics.
11.Do you have any words of encouragement for prospective Uni students or those still working towards it? If yes, please share!
Enjoy your course. I don’t think people should dedicate years to something they detest. Also, if you go to Uni in a different country from the one you grew up in, please try and mix with people from other parts of the world.
Shout out to Ozioma for answering these <3
