My friend is studying Economics and Finance and she has a bit to share about herself and how Uni has been for her. Enjoy!!

1. Can you briefly introduce yourself?

Hello!! My name is Mutale and I am a second year Economics and Finance Student at the University of Surrey. I come from a beautiful country in Southern Africa called Zambia. I like to read, write and spend LOADS of time with my family. I also love my baby brother – he is 14 LOL – a lot so shout out to Chewe Chewe (yes, his first name is his last name).

2. Why did you choose the course you are studying?

I chose to study Economics and Finance because I felt like God led me to it. Initially I was meant to study a different course and my decision was very spontaneous. I am glad that I did follow what He was saying to me as I enjoy my course thoroughly. I thought that it would be difficult initially due to what I was told and the fact that it had so much math was daunting; but He who has promised is faithful and has seen me through!

3. What are some of the modules you take?

I have taken about 12 courses from the beginning of my degree until date. However, my favourite courses have been Macroeconomics, Statistics and Econometrics.

4. What are 5 things you have learned in university, (or more)?

I have definitely learnt a lot from my 18 months of University. The most important thing being: let God lead. Sometimes it’s easy to get so wound up in the world’s way of doing things… having to study like a crazy person to get that First Class, being stressed during exam period, being anxious about tests and exams… the list goes on. I believe that God wants to manifest His glory even through the exams and tests – so they don’t have to be dreadful when you allow Him to take control! (NB: The Holy Spirit will lead you toward the mind of the examiner, so please read lol).

Secondly, don’t let someone else’s experience determine your experience. We are all different and just because someone found something difficult does not mean it will be difficult for you.

Thirdly: LIVE. I know for a fact that due to me not implementing the first two points that I spent my first year of University panicking over nothing. God has got your back. Trust Him.

Also, join a club or society that interests you. You never know what you will learn just by being around different people with different thought patterns. It’s definitely an eye-opening experience that teaches you invaluable life lessons – transferable to the work place (I know; I should be a placement administrator).

Finally, be yourself. It’s easy to get swept away by culture in not just University but the world at large. Know yourself, who you are and WHOSE you are. You were bought at a price and Jesus loves you beyond anything that you could ever fathom. Don’t let anyone’s opinion steer clear of that FACT!!

5. If your parents and others opinions, societal pressures and the need for money were non-existent, what would you do? CAREER wise not vacation wise plix :p

If there was no pressure from my parents/society to study a particular course and I would get no remuneration – I would still study Economics. I really enjoy having to understand what I previously found bewildering on Bloomberg. You could say that’s my higher order need, satisfied!

6. Do you have any words of encouragement for prospective Uni students or those still working towards it? If yes, please share!

If you are heading out to University, I would advise you to just be open-minded, have fun and allow God to LOVE you throughout your experience. I came into University not knowing what to expect; with a lot of fear but now I can confidently testify to the fact that God is more than able! Allow Him to be your anchor. You never know what 3 or 4 years of University can do to you.
